Joanna Apostolou holds three causes dear to her heart, and hopes the Miss Universe Canada pageant will allow her to strengthen her role as an ambassador for cancer awareness, women’s rights and child and youth welfare.
Since her brother was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2004, Joanna has worked closely with the Canadian Cancer Society and the Make a Wish Foundation to raise awareness and generate support for those living with and affected by cancer.
Joanna is a champion of women, and believes in equality for people of all genders, races, ages and backgrounds. She leads fitness classes at an all-women’s gym in Toronto, and through her dedication and positive encouragement, she motivates her clients to achieve their goals.
Empowering others to reach their full potential has been an awarding experience for Joanna, and she is currently writing a self-help book geared toward helping young women build self-esteem and live their dreams. “Loving yourself the way God made you is the most important skill anyone – especially a young girl – can learn,” says Joanna. Through a local community program, Joanna dedicates her time to mentoring young women.
Joanna is an English student at Ryerson University and a member of the Ryerson Student Union. She aspires to be a crown attorney so that she may have the opportunity to help Canadians in need. Of all the things she may do in her life, Joanna believes this career will enable her to help others, which is among the most satisfying thing for her. Helping one person may seem like a small accomplishment. But she believes all those ones can add up and make a big difference. Joanna hopes she can ultimately contribute to making our society more compassionate, just and equitable.
She is also a classically trained pianist and opera singer, and a former child actor and model.
