AGE: 26 | HEIGHT: 5'6" | HOMETOWN: CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH, NL

If you've never been cod fishing, for a ride on snowmobile, or seen a moose up close and personal, 26 year old Lori O'Keefe of Newfoundland and Labrador invites you to visit her hometown of Port Saunders. Growing up in this town of 800 people she felt fortunate to have the ocean at her front step and the rugged Newfoundland wilderness in her backyard. The most amazing playgrounds imaginable!

She played every sport offered at her local high school, took part in drama club, public speaking, science fairs, air cadets, and musicals, allowing her to travel throughout her province and country. Lori excelled in high school. Valedictorian of her graduating class, Lori was awarded Student of the Year, the Student Council Award, several scholarships, the Lion's Club Community Service Award, had the highest academic average, and was MVP of several sports teams.

She continued to excel in university where she was awarded a Medal for Academic Excellence from Memorial University as well as several scholarships while completing her Bachelor of Education degree at the University of New Brunswick.

Health and fitness take a priority in Lori's life. She not only completed a degree in Recreation, she is also a certified physical education teacher in the province of New Brunswick. Recently, Lori completed her Personal Trainers Specialist course and is in the process of opening her own fitness training business.

As is Newfoundland tradition, you'll be invited in for a kitchen party where you might just find Lori singing and playing guitar. So, take a right at Toronto and keep on truckin'!

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR "DREAM JOB" IN LIFE?
Honestly, my "dream job" is to be a singer, entertainer or performer. Unfortunately, my talents lie in other areas but I do enjoy the rush of standing in front a group and presenting. Luckily as a teacher you have daily opportunities to do that.

NAME ONE PERSON, OTHER THAN YOUR PARENTS, WHO HAS HAD THE MOST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? WHY?
Other than my parents, my best friend Aaron has had the most influence on my life. Aaron has a positive attitude and optimistic outlook on life that is unmatched. He has a generous spirit, always sees the good in people, and can turn even the most negative and challenging situation into a positive experience. Aaron lost his mom very quickly and unexpectedly to cancer when he was 21. Although he is the youngest of five children and was attending university at the time, he packed up his life and moved home to be with his father who needed him greatly. I have been inspired by his strength and as a realist have been learning how to see the positive in all situations, as he does. This man also happens to be my boyfriend and for that I am very thankful.

WHAT IS THE PROUDEST PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT (OTHER THAN BEING IN THIS OR ANY OTHER BEAUTY PAGEANT COMPETITION)
My proudest personal accomplishment would be finishing my second degree at the age of 22. I have always worked hard to excel when faced with an academic challenge. I finished my first degree at the age of 21, was awarded the universities medal of academic excellence and immediately went on to finish my second degree. Maintaining one of the highest GPA's in my program and winning several scholarships was a highlight of my university career. When other little girls were dreaming of their wedding day I dreamed of standing on a stage being presented with my university diploma as my parents watched on. It was a proud moment for me and my parents.

WHAT IS YOUR CAREER AMBITION AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING OR PLAN TO DO TO ACCOMPLISH THAT GOAL?
My career ambition is to create policy that would ensure improved physical education and health curriculum in our school system. To accomplish this goal I have attained degrees in Recreation and Education and I am a certified physical education teacher in the province of New Brunswick. I have plans to complete my Masters in Education which would allow me career opportunities where I would be in a position to make such changes. I have also completed the Personal Trainers Specialist course giving me the knowledge and practical skills to improve the health of the general population.

DESCRIBE WHERE YOU WERE RAISED AND WHAT YOUR CHILDHOOD WAS LIKE.
My brother and I were very fortunate to have grown up in a family filled with love in a small, safe, and supportive community of 800 people on the northern peninsula of Newfoundland. The ocean was at my front step and my backyard was filled with wildlife and endless outdoor adventures. In winter I could catch a ride on snowmobile to school or broomball practice. In summer I would swim at a nearby pond and have fires on the beach.

Although the nearest mall, Walmart, and theatre were over three hours away I never felt isolated. Because my high school was so small it allowed me the opportunity to make sports teams that perhaps I wouldn't have if I had gone to a larger school. I could also participate in public speaking competitions, drama club, student council, musicals, science fairs, and cadets. The opportunities were endless!

My Grandmother and Grandfather Patey's house was a mere five feet from mine. They were a second set of parents and provided me with guidance and love, and of course spoiled me as best they could! My Nan O'Keefe would make meat buns and home fries for her whole family and when they gathered I'm sure the voices of the O'Keefe's could be heard throughout the town. I always had my extended family around and spent much of my time with cousins, aunts and uncles. It was a dream childhood!

LIST ANY INTERESTING OR UNUSUAL JOBS YOU MAY HAVE HAD.
I spent four months collecting sewage samples with the Department of Environment. A great learning experiencing but definitely not for those with a weak stomach!

For two years I worked as a college instructor. I taught the Early Childhood Education program and while that may not seem unusual, when your students are older than you and have children of their own it makes for some very interesting lectures.

LIST ANY VOLUNTEERING YOU HAVE DONE.
Academy Canada Children's Halloween and Christmas Parties; Miss Teen Newfoundland & Labrador chaperone (2002-2004); Director of the Miss Teen Western Newfoundland Competition; Director of the Miss Teen Northern Peninsula Pageant; Coach of several sports teams; Terry Fox Run; Canadian Cancer Society Fashion Fundraiser; Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

WHERE IS THE MOST INTERESTING PLACE YOU HAVE BEEN?
Of the many places I have visited across Canada and other areas of the world the most interesting place is without a doubt L'Anse aux Meadows. Steeped in history and amazing archaeological discoveries, this National Historic and UNESCO World Heritage site gives us a glimpse into our Canadian past. In 6000 B.P. Native's lived on the site, followed by the Norse in 1000 A.D., and French migratory fishermen and Basque whalers from 1600 to 1800 A.D. It's incredible that such a site exists right here in Canada. I think it's important to know and discover your own corner of the world so you can better appreciate and understand others.

WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER CONTESTANTS?
I'm sure each contestant will bring with her a variety of characteristics that distinguish her from others - but I am willing to bet most of them have never been cod jigging! I'm truly an All-Canadian girl. Born and raised in a small town in Canada, by my parents who were also born and raised in the same small town, I grew up playing sports, watching hockey at the local rink, going to church on Sunday, ice fishing and riding snowmobile. I can hunt and fish, sing and play guitar, and I love a good "kitchen party."

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF/IN LIFE?
I don't have a motto or quote that I follow, however my parents, Edward and Connie, instilled in me the importance of working hard and treating others with compassion and respect. If you can do these things then I believe you can live your life honestly and with integrity.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO BE DOING IN 10 YEARS?
In ten years I have no idea what I will be doing but I do hope I am happy. I hope that I have a balance of career and family life that allows me to feel fulfilled. If I have learned anything in the past few years it is that you never know what life will throw at you. I would love to think that I will be working in a satisfying career within the school system while being surrounded by loving friends and family and I will work hard for those things, but one never knows what opportunities life will bring!

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF? SOMETHING UNIQUE THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU? SOME INTERESTING THING ABOUT YOU?

-I didn't always know that I wanted to be a teacher. For a long time I thought I would be a dentist or working in the business world. When I first stepped into the classroom I knew I was exactly where I should be. Working with young children who will one day become the future leaders, politicians, mothers and fathers that will shape our world is incredible. On a daily basis I am witness to hundreds of "light bulb" moments and am satisfied knowing that even in the slightest way I may have altered the life of a child.

- I love pageants! I love meeting women who come from all over the country and share their backgrounds and stories. I love the preparation involved, both physically and mentally. And, I absolutely love breaking down the stereotype of what a "typical" pageant contestant should be. At first glance I may not look the typical pageant girl. If you see me weight lifting in the gym But that's what pageants are all about! These women have personal stories, they are women who contribute to the community and make a difference every day in the lives of others.
