WHAT WOULD BE YOUR "DREAM JOB" IN LIFE?
As a child it was my dream to be a supermodel, I
wanted to be Cindy Crawford. As I grew up my dream evolved and
I dreamed about becoming Miss Universe Canada.
However I don't want to limit myself to one "dream"
job. Truly my dream job would be any job that I am happy to go
to everyday, that I am successful at and that would allow me the
time to continue my charitable efforts.
NAME ONE PERSON, OTHER THAN YOUR PARENTS, WHO HAS HAD THE MOST
INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE? WHY?
I know this man who I am sure must be in his 70's,
but I will never know his true age. This is because every time
he has a birthday I ask him how old he is and he responds, 23
years old (he believes this is the perfect age). He is a kindhearted
man who spent his younger years serving in the navy and then went
on to become a successful businessman, but he was always a family
man. Even with a career and 4 daughters to raise, he always made
time to help with his community. He is now retired but continues
to work tirelessly as a volunteer, including being the Zone Commander
for 11 different Royal Canadian Legions. This man became my male
role model from a young age when my father passed away. I have
learnt from him the importance of helping others and the need
to help make the community around you better. But the best part
about this man is that he is my grandfather.
WHAT IS THE PROUDEST PERSONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT
(OTHER THAN BEING IN THIS OR ANY OTHER BEAUTY PAGEANT COMPETITION)
I am really proud of the two planning committees
that I am a part of.
First, is the Sun and Salsa Festival. This committee
plans the festival which attracted 100,000 people last year. This
festival holds two goals: to build awareness of the businesses
in the community and to raise money for charities. Last year we
raised $36,000 for the LEAD Foundation & for the Agape Hospice.
It was really incredible to watch my input and hard work help
improve this festival, and I could not be more proud of how this
festival has developed over the past 4 years while I have been
involved with it.
In addition to helping plan the festival, I also
created a three new entertainment venues for this festival. First
is the Miss Sun and Salsa Pageant, which I direct. Last year I
was able to raise $20,000 in sponsorship and prize donations for
the pageant. This pageant is going into its fifth year and has
become very successful. In fact, one of the titleholders from
last year, Miss Sun & Salsa 2008, Adwoa Yamoah will be competing
with me this year at MUC 09. The second was to bring in a buskers
entertainment stage to showcase local artists. Lastly, the third
was to implement a "festival within a festival". I developed
a new area called the Children's Carnival which is strictly focused
on family entertainment, family values and family vendors. This
area helped broaden our target audience and helped introduce families
to our unique community.
Second, I am proud to be one of the organizers of
the non-profit 'Calgary Glam Jam' group. This group is dedicated
to improving the fashion industry in Calgary by producing events
that provide opportunities for photographers, models, makeup artists,
hair stylists & wardrobe stylists to network with each other.
I am looking forward to our next event "Fashion
Forward" in September. It will be similar to a typical fashion
week, spanning just 1 night and featuring opportunities for both
local designers & local boutiques. Additionally it will provide
opportunities to models & photographers to develop advertising
campaigns for these boutiques.
For more information on either of these groups you
can visit:
www.visitkensington.com & www.calgaryglamjam.com
WHAT IS YOUR CAREER AMBITION AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING OR PLAN TO
DO TO ACCOMPLISH THAT GOAL?
My career ambition was to own my own event management
company. I am proud to say I have accomplished that goal this
year by starting my company Canadian Beauties - Event and Model
Management. I currently run this company as a sole proprietorship.
My next goal is to expand my company in 2010 to
a limited company and have an official launch to the public. I
also intend on applying for youth business grants in order to
expand my supply and equipment needs.
DESCRIBE WHERE YOU WERE RAISED AND WHAT YOUR
CHILDHOOD WAS LIKE.
I spent my childhood moving around from city to
city because my mother's national gymnastics coaching career took
her around the country. I have lived in 11 different cities and
moved over 30 times. I once lived in Halifax for all of one day!
I spent most of my childhood in a gym being a gymnast,
which I loved. Although I was never able to get past my fear of
cracking my head open, it made for many funny stories. My mom's
favorite story of me as a child was me ducking under the high
bars every time I had to walk under them.
I have always been very close to my family. I have
one sister who is almost 4 years younger than me but we usually
get confused for twins. As a child I would always spend at least
a month every summer with my grandparents. We would always arrive
with a list of chores to help with, but it never bothered us.
We would paint the fence, mow the lawn, do some baking with grandma
and help do the gardening. They had a rather large vegetable and
fruit garden. My favorite part was the strawberry patch, which
I always spent an extra long time "gardening" (or should
I say eating!).
LIST ANY INTERESTING OR UNUSUAL JOBS YOU MAY
HAVE HAD.
One of the most unusual jobs I have ever had was
for a Stars Air Ambulance fundraising dinner. I had to hand build
the centerpieces for the event. The tricky part was that the centerpieces
were miniature models of oil towers (the event was being sponsored
by an oil company). I had to hand cut and glue all the very tiny
pieces of balsa wood together for 75 centerpieces. Needless to
say, it took a very long time.
One of the most interesting jobs I have ever had
was being a Resident Advisor at my college dorm. I was able to
plan many different social and academic events for the dorm residents.
I also had to make sure the dorm rules were being followed and
act as a counsellor to the 96 residents.
LIST ANY VOLUNTEERING YOU HAVE DONE.
I am very proud of the work I am doing with the
Kensington BRZ (business revitalization zone) Board. The purpose
of a BRZ is to improve, beautify and maintain municipally owned
lands, buildings and structures in the area, in addition to creating
more awareness of the community in order to help benefit the local
business owners. I volunteer a great deal of my time to the BRZ
to help in coordinating community events, advertising campaigns
and marketing analysis.
In addition to all of the charities I mentioned
earlier, I have also volunteered with the following business organizations,
schools and community associations;
" The Calgary Stampede
" Calgary's Child Family Magazine
" Saskatchewan Royal Purple and Elks
" Hot Shots High School Film and Ad Awards
" Vincent Massey Jr. High School Outdoor Education Program
" Central Memorial High School
" College of the Rockies
" Crowsnest Consolidated High School
" St. John's Fine Arts School
" Strathcona Community Association
" Rangers Soccer Club
" Scouts Canada
" Hard Disk Café
" Pengrowth
" Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association
" Salon Escape
" Willow Studio
" Healthy Calgary
" Save Kananaskis/Tag a Tree Campaign
WHERE IS THE MOST INTERESTING PLACE YOU HAVE BEEN?
As a child I had a very unique travelling experience.
My family and I traveled around the outer states of USA and the
lower half of Canada for 3 months. I visited many interesting
places, including Parliament Hill for the changing of the guards,
NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center, Disneyland and Disneyworld,
SeaWorld, Universal Studios (the earthquake exhibit was my favorite),
and we even travelled to the Florida Keys on the overseas highway.
However the most interesting place we travelled
to was Tijuana, Mexico. This tourist city provided my first glimpse
into the reality of poverty in our world. My experience there
as a child helped develop my ambition to assist others less fortunate
than myself.
WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER CONTESTANTS?
I am very proud of the charitable efforts I have
made over the past 3 years. My goal in life is to be able to help
raise 1 Million dollars for charities and worthy causes within
10 years.
I started this goal in 2006 when I become Miss Calgary. In the
past 3 years I have been able to directly help in raising more
than $200,000 and volunteer over 900 hours of my time for charities
& business organizations.
Additionally with my position at Kensington Fitness
Studio I have also been able to provide charities with nearly
$18,000 worth of donations for silent auctions in 3 years.
I believe my volunteering efforts, my love of pageantry,
my experience as a role model and representative of my city as
Miss Calgary 2006 and Miss Earth Calgary 2008 make me unique and
different from other contestants.
WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF/IN LIFE?
I live my life by two philosophies;
" "Move out of your comfort zone. You
can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable
when you try something new." - Brian Tracy (American TV Host)
" Treat others how you want to be treated.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO BE DOING IN 10 YEARS?
I hope to be married, own a home, have a few cats,
1 dog and have a successful career in event management and pageantry.
Additionally I hope to have reached my goal of helping
raise 1 million dollars for charity.
I would also like to be helping take care of my
family, who have been so good to me.
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?
I eat, live and breathe pageants!
Pageantry is something I truly believe in, not only
for myself but for all young women. I believe in the life skills
that it develops such as; interview, public speaking and networking
skills. All of these skills are valuable assets which will help
you in everyday life or career situations.
Through pageantry you can discover so much about
your inner self, you gain self confidence, poise and knowledge
about your community and country. Every contestant should leave
a pageant richer from the experiences and skills they have gained.
I have quite an extensive background in pageantry
starting when I was 14 entering the Miss Teen Calgary Pageant.
Since then I have become Miss Calgary 2006 & Miss Earth Calgary
2008. I have also won many awards and placements along the way.
When I became Miss Calgary 2006 I was the first contestant ever
to win all three available awards, the Scholastic, Achievement
and Friendship Awards. I also won the Scholastic award the previous
two years. Additionally I competed in Miss World Canada 2007 pageant
where I was a Top 10 finalist and won the Beauty with a Purpose
title. I also recently competed in the Miss Earth Canada 2008
pageant where I placed as 3rd Runner up, and won the Beauty for
a Cause title and Miss Congeniality award.
However pageantry is more than just being a contestant
for me. I plan to have a career in pageantry as a director and
organizer. I currently organize a local pageant in Calgary called
the Miss Sun & Salsa Pageant. This is my first of many pageants
that I plan to direct and I am looking forward to this next step
in pageantry.
SOMETHING UNIQUE THAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU?
I used to live in Sydney, British Columbia
and I would crab fish off the docks with my family. One day a
seal decided it wanted the bait out of my crab cage. I ended up
playing tug-of-war with the seal, me on the dock pulling the rope
to the cage and the seal under water pulling my cage. I won! Well
sort of, the seal did get most of my bait, but I kept the cage.
