What charity/charities have you supported with your
time and/or resources over past two years?
My church's young adult group, I went on a mission
trips to Vancouver Islands and Mexico to provide care

to offer these children friendship, sisterhood, and motherhood
all at the same time.
In my year abroad in Paris, I was surprised by the severity
of Poverty apparent in the city. I initiated Samedi: Le
Jour du Croissant where every Saturday morning I bought
croissants and walked around different parts of the city
handing out croissants to homeless people. My friends
joined me for this act of kindness. I also participated
in serving food to the homeless in my church in Paris.
What would be your "dream job"
in life?
My dream job would be to become a Canadian Ambassador
to Korea, which is my country of birth. It has been my
dream ever since I realized my interest and talent in
Politics and Public Relations. It would be an honour to
be able to represent Canada, a country known for its peace
and order. As a Korean-Canadian she would consider it
a privilege to be involved in improving relations between
the two countries that have offered her so much. Also,
I would be able to contribute to the improvement of relations
between South and North Korea.
Name one person, other than your parents,
who has had the most influence on your life? Why?
Other than my parents, the person who has had the
most influence in my life is God. I have been a devoted
Christian all my life and God has taught and led me in
every parts of my life. He has always been faithful and
has always been the same - yesterday, today and tomorrow.
The other person who has been an enormous influence in
my life is my big sister, Cecilia. She is the hardest
working person I have ever encountered in my life. She
is driven and she gives 110 percent in everything she
does. Most of all, she puts everyone before herself and
is very thoughtful. I am very blessed to have a sister
whom I admire so much.
What is the proudest personal accomplishment (other
than being in this or any other beauty pageant competition)?
In Grade 12, I was featured in an article because
I became a Student Council President. In this article,
I said I would like to go to University of Ottawa to study
Politics and to work as a Page in the Parliament. A year
after this interview, I was a student at University of
Ottawa selected as one 15 Senate Pages. I was once again
featured in an article as a Senate Page where I said in
a year or two; I hope to work in the Parliament, specifically
in Parliamentary Affairs. Today, I am a Parliamentary
Assistant in the House of Commons.
I have been very consistent in achieving my short-term
goals; I have been able to make these dreams come true
- This is my Proudest Personal Accomplishment.
What is your career ambition and what are you doing
or plan to do to accomplish that goal?
I would like to become an ambassador of Canada one
day.
In high school, I was selected to participate in Encounters
with Canada and Forum for Young Canadians, two programs
offered by the Government of Canada for students across
the country to come to the National Capital for a week
to learn and gain first-hand experience of Parliamentary
Affairs. Also, I was chosen to represent Canada in Presidential
Forum, a weeklong program in Washington, DC where students
from all over the world gather to learn about American
Politics and Foreign Affairs (We were greeted by the Vice
Pesident and the President of United States). In University,
I studied Political Science. As a student, I was chosen
as one of 15 Senate Pages. During my two years as a Page,
I also held a summer job position in the Clerk of the
Senate's office.
After my time as a Senate Page has come to an end, I continued
to work in the Parliament in the House of Commons.
My next plan is to carry on in the job position I am in,
further broadening my knowledge in parliamentary affairs.
In the near future, I plan to prepare for the Foreign
Affairs Examination.
Describe where you were raised and what your childhood
was like.
I was born and raised in Seoul, Korea until I was
8 years old. In Korea, my entire family (my cousins, grandparents,
etc) lived very close. I remember going over to my grandmother's
house once a week for a big family dinner. Holidays were
always packed, yet joyful. My mother was a preschool principal
and my grandmother was a kindergarten principal. My early
child education hence was provided by mother and my grandmother.
When we immigrated to Canada, it was hard at first because
of the absence of my large and close-knit family. This
emptiness was quickly replaced with our good friends.
We were able to be there for one another during good and
bad times.
List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.
I am currently in training to become A Body Attack
(aerobics) instructor at GoodLife Fitness! Body Attack
is a high impact, athletic class by Les MILLS; an international
fitness Program first began in New Zealand.
List any volunteering you have done.
Volunteering has always been a big part of my life,
which permits me to give to others. Throughout years I
have volunteered to eat lunch and provide academic help
and friendship to other fellow students with disabilities.
Also, I have been involved in numerous activities to help
homeless including blanket drives, serving food and helping
them prepare for job interviews.
Also, while living in Vancouver, I volunteered at a care
home for elders as a Candy Striper for over 5 years. There,
I received an award for volunteering over 200 hours. I
loved spending time here because I build friendships the
elderly there.
Where is the most interesting place you
have been?
The most interesting place I have been is Egypt. I
visited Cairo, Luxor, and Sharm El-Sheikh. It was amazing
to see living history. My senses were filled by the myriad
of sounds, sights and smells that I have never experienced
anywhere else in the world. I felt a sense of wonder and
mystique when I was there that I think we have lost here
in the West. Moreover, seeing the poor conditions people
have to live in has given me a renewed appreciation for
all the blessings in my life and has emboldened me to
fight against poverty.
What makes you unique and different from the other
contestants?
I am unique because I am driven to succeed. I am also
a person who occupies a third space in terms of identity.
I am both a Canadian and a Korean; I am an example of
a child globalization and multiculturalism. This is why
I speak three languages and I am trying to master new
ones. I can identify with different cultures and appreciate
them for what they are as well as absorb them in my worldview.
What is your philosophy of/in life?
Love my God with all your heart and love your neighbours
as myself. I live to raise God and people above myself.
Love binds us all. I try to love others as best as I could
even though I know I fall short of this ideal. This is
why I participate in many volunteer activities and that's
why I am interested in politics. I want to bring a new
perspective to public life.
The following quote especially rings true in my life:
those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and
those who humble themselves will be exalted.
What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?
In 10 years, I hope to be married to man whose priorities
match mine in terms of my philosophy on life. I would
hope to still be working in public life and specifically
in foreign affairs to improve relations between Canada
and other nations. I would like to continue to express,
through my work in foreign affairs, that Canada is a peacemaking
country. Also, I wish for a life that puts priority in
family and in caring for others.
Is there anything you would like to tell us about yourself?
Something unique that has happened to you? Some interesting
thing about you?
1. Being part of Miss Universe Canada is a forgotten dream
coming true. My family recently moved to a new home and
while I was unpacking, I found my first ever homework
assignment from Grade One. I had to write what I wanted
to become when I grow up. The answer I had written was
`Miss Korea`(I was living in Korea at the time). I am
honoured to be given a chance to fulfill the Canadian
version of this childhood dream.
2. In 2007, I spent a year abroad in Paris.
My year in Paris was unbelievable! One of many interesting
things that happened to me while living there was being
approached on the street to be cast in a Dove Commercial.
After two casting calls, I was on board (a plane) to film
a Dove commercial in Bucharest, Romania. Being new to
the entertainment world, it was an enchanting experience.
The Commercial now runs in North America.
3. My mother is a Breast-Cancer survivor.
Her battle took place during my first year in university.
It was especially difficult because I was living on my
own and was not able to be with my mom during all of her
operations. My mother is a strong woman; she fought through
so much. She taught me to never lose faith in God even
in the hardest times of life. My mother has been healthy
for nearly 5 years. Through this experience, my family
learned the importance of relying on one another.
